Song Analysis Part 2

In the song, the metaphor of a game of cards is used. Can you find evidence in the lyrics to support this? What does this metaphor mean? Why is it used?

In verse five, she says that she “deal[s her] own deck; sometimes the ace, sometimes the deuces”. This is a metaphor for she is control of her own life, and makes her own choices. The second part of this quote also means that not everything always goes right, but she carries on because sooner or later everything will even out again.

What is the meaning of the word ‘deuces’?

“Deuces”, in cards, means a card with the number two. In the song, it is a metaphor for bad things while aces are a metaphor for good things.

What does it mean by the phrase ‘there’s no return and no deposit’?

This quote means that we should be free in life, as ultimately there’s nothing to gain and nothing to lose. You should stand up for what you believe in, as you only have “one life”.

Describe the level of formality in the song. Use evidence to support your point. Why is this level of formality used?

The song is written in quite an informal way, as most pop songs are, to engage with their audience and get a message across easily. Lots of repetition is used, and the song is altogether fun and informal, while still conveying an important message about individuality.
